A Prisoner's Guide to Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual Rights

This toolkit has been produced by the Prisoners's Advice Service (PAS) and is for prisoners who self-identify as lesbian, gay or bisexual. It is also for anyone who is questioning their sexual identity or think they may identify as not straight. The guide may also be useful to those who do not identify as lesbian, gay or bisxual, but engage in same-sex sexual activity.

The guide provides information about:

  • Your rights as a lesbian, gay, or bisexual person in prison

  • The Equality Act 2010 and the Human Rights Act 1998

  • What to expect from staff and other prisoners

  • Sex in prison and sexual health

  • Dealing with harassment or abuse

  • Cell sharing

  • Communication with LGBT Groups & accessing LGBT materials

  • What to do if you think your rights are not being respected

This guide is specifically designed for people in prison in England & Wales, though some of the information may be helpful for prisoners in Scotland & Northern Ireland.

There is a separate toolkit for transgender prisoners.
